Oahu's North Shore
The major town on the North Shore is
Haleiwa (Ha-lay-eeeva)
and the best way to see the town is to park your car and walk. The
Haleiwa Art Festival is held in July. The other towns on the North
Shore are Kahuku and Laie.
The North Shore of Oahu is famous for its beaches and incredible
surf. The ocean and surfing are a way of life here. This is a place
for relaxation where the pace is much slower than Honolulu and
Waikiki. The magnificent beaches are very popular, especially when
the surf is up!
CAUTION: The winter swells on the North Shore beaches have
to be seen to be believed, with waves recorded up to 50 feet (15
metres) high. These conditions are extremely dangerous for novice
surfers and swimmers. Drownings are common when the lifeguard
instructions and designated swimming areas are ignored.
There are two
routes to the North Shore and travel time is approximately 1hr 30
mins. The longer route uses the Interstate highway network where
travel is mostly on freeways and major roads. The shorter option
takes about the same time and follows a winding route along the
coastline. A rental car is an
important consideration for travel on the island.
The
Waimea Valley
Audubon Center offers visitors a chance to take a break from the
sand and surf of the North Shore. It provides an opportunity to walk
gentle pathways, trek old trails and simply enjoy pristine Hawaiian
nature. Bird lovers, flora and fauna enthusiasts, history
buffs, and anyone who appreciates a true Hawaiian island experience
will find it all in the Waimea Valley.
The
Dole
Plantation is located at 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway, a
40-45-minute drive from Waikiki and has the slogan of "Hawaii's
Complete Pineapple Experience". Operating hours are 9:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. daily.
This attraction has the Pineapple Garden Maze, officially recognized
in the Guinness Book of World Records 2001 as the world’s largest
maze. It covers an area of three acres and has a path of 3.11 miles
(5 kms). The maze walls are made of over 11,000 Hawaii plants.
The Pineapple
Express is two-mile long, 20-minute narrated train tour that is
great fun for children and adults alike. Learn the history of the
pineapple in Hawaii's agriculture and the fascinating story of James
Dole. See some of the North Shore's most beautiful scenery.
The Dole Plantation Garden Tour is a self-guided educational tour
that offers a up-close view of a wide variety of crops being grown
on Oahu's North Shore. Learn about the plantation villages and the
laborers from all over the world who came to to work in Hawaii’s
sugarcane and pineapple fields.
